RCGP Response To Pill On Demand From Pharmacies - 10 Dec 08
Source
Professor Steve Field, Chairman of the RCGP said:
- “We would feel more comfortable if the GP initiated the use of the Pill and then worked with the pharmacist to issue repeat prescriptions.
- “It is more complex than just handing out a sugar pill. You need to take a good medical history of blood clots and migraine, which is not always straightforward. There are complex decisions to be made about which brand of pill to use as some carry a greater risk of blood clots, which can be fatal in rare cases.
- “GPs also use the consultation as an opportunity to discuss the woman’s general health and which method of contraception is most appropriate - an injection or coil might be more suitable - as well as talking about the importance of safe sex to protect against infections.”
