GMS Contract 2007/2008: Directed Enhanced Services for Access and Choice and Booking
Joint Statement from NHS Employers and the BMA’s GPs Committee - Directed Enhanced Services rolled over
NHS Employers and the BMA's General Practitioners Committee (GPC) have agreed that 2006/07 Directed Enhanced Services for Access and for Choice and Booking will be rolled over essentially unchanged for the current year 2007/08.
- Dr Hamish Meldrum, chairman of the GPC, said: ”This is good news as it gets rid of any uncertainty that existed about the status of these two enhanced services.”
- Dr Barbara Hakin, chair of NHS Employers’ GMS negotiating team said: “These DESs deliver national priorities. Extending them for a further year will enable practices to continue their work on improving their patients’ access to services and offering them choice in their consultant outpatient appointments.”

GMS Contract 2007/2008: Directed Enhanced Services for Access and Choice and Booking
Agreement has now been reached on the DESs for 07/08. Of the four that were in place in 06/07 the two for Practice based Commissioning and IM&T ceased on 31 March 2007. However, the one year DESs for Access and Choice and Booking will roll over for a further year to 31 March 2008. Broadly, these two DESs remain the same in that there will be advanced payment when practices sign up to the content of the DES and parts of the awards will be linked to the outcome of the GP Patient Survey. Thresholds within these DESs remain the same. More details about the specifics will be available shortly. Directions to PCTs to commission these services will be issued as soon as practical, backdated to 1 April 2007.
These two DESs will replace any similar local enhanced services that PCTs have put in place. It would be helpful if you could cascade this information to your PCTs as soon as possible.
