Ecoli 0157 |

Many different strains of ecoli exist and are associated with gastrointestinal infection.
Although there are many classifications the most serious is VTEC E.coli (Verocytotoxic ecoli.) This is an e-coli that produces an exotoxin that can cause Haemolytic Uraemic Syndrome.
The most common strain in many European countries is Ecoli 0157; it may be food borne and has the potential to cause large outbreaks and secondary spread.
The ultimate source of most ecoli 0157 is animal faeces, most often cattle, sheep or goats, but other animals can also carry it.
This form of ecoli can also cause HUS (Haemorrhagic Uraemic Syndrome), and can be attributed to one of the most common causes of acute renal failure, specifically in children.
In rural areas like the South West and with ever increasing wet periods throughout the year ecoli can be present in many areas such as fields, animal petting zoo’s beaches, streams and through eating salad and vegetables that still harbour soil. Much of this risk can be reduced by simple hand washing with soap and water and thorough washing of leaf vegetables and fruit before eating.
Over the last few weeks we have seen an increase in the number of cases of ecoli 0157 in both adults and children across the county, although they do not appear to be linked with the ever changing climate and the move towards healthier lifestyles awareness of this organism is important as a cause of diarrhoea and vomiting, particularly if there is blood in the stools. If a case is suspected, a careful eye needs to be kept on urine output, and if confirmed the case needs a clinical review.
