Dr M Salzmann
(Consultant in Clinical Chemistry, RD&E) gave a talk entitled “The
Significance of Abnormal Values in Biochemical Profiles – When We Need to Act
and What to Do Next”. He commenced with a brief history of the dramatic
development of laboratory services since 1989 and outlined the range of services
currently available with the advent of hospital shift work. Dr Salzmann then
provided clinical examples of abnormally high (potassium) and low (calcium)
results which were provided by the laboratory and how these should be
interpreted and managed. He highlighted the factors which can result in
laboratory errors and suggested possibly repeating the test (and/or discussing
the result with the Biochemist on-call) if it did not fit with the clinical
picture. He completed the talk by reminding the Group that laboratory errors
can occur and the importance of keeping this in mind before acting on the
result. As a footnote to this presentation two useful websites for pathology
results/information are provided:
www.devonhealth.nhs.uk/apps/pathology/ (Biochem Dept. Wonford)
www.labtestsonline.org.uk (national site mainly designed for patients)
The issue of appropriate salaried
GP payment continues to receive national concern and attention. The GPC’s
Sessional GPs subcommittee is currently undertaking a survey of sessional GPs
with specific questions on pay and working conditions. It is recommended that
all sessional GPs receiving the survey should complete and return it in order
to provide useful information to the GPC for future employment negotiations.
The current DDRB recommended salary scale for a salaried GP in a nGMS practice
or PCO for 2005-2206 (full-time @ 37.5 hours) is £49,248 - £74,816. The GPC
committee consider this to be inadequate and will be pressing for this to be
significantly up rated next year. Salaried GP payments were discussed at the
meeting and a statement is provided by the ESGPG in the attached document. - Link
Dr Mohan suggested to
the Group the possibility of setting aside an evening meeting dedicated to an
open discussion on what the members feel would the most appropriate and useful
future events for the Group. This would enable all Group members the
opportunity to directly influence what future events are provided. The
suggestion of such a meeting was agreed by all and will occur on 6th
September 2005.
As a result of a very
good response to the previous forum and funding now available there will be a
further skin forum organised for September/October 2005. The date will be
announced soon.
