Sessional GP Summer Newsletter
An increasing number of GPs have expressed a preference for salaried contracts. The global sum gives practices new flexibility to appoint salaried staff. PCOs, with the new opportunity of direct provision, can now offer a salaried option. This document focuses on GPs employed by GMS practices and by PCOs. In the future there will be the opportunity to work as a salaried GP for an Alternative Provider of Medical Services (APMS).
Who is a salaried GP?
The term "salaried GP" can be used to describe any GP who is employed by a practice, a PCO or an Alternative Providers Medical Services (APMS). It includes the following: Assistants, Associates, GP Retainees, Flexible Career Scheme GPs, Returner Scheme GPs.
BMA launches new handbook for Salaried GPs - Update...
The BMA today (Thursday, 12th February 2009) launches a new Salaried GPs Handbook 2009 designed to give employers and employees comprehensive information on the legal and contractual issues facing salaried GPs.
A hard copy of the handbook will be sent to all BMA’s salaried GP members and is available to all BMA members on the BMA website - www.bma.org.uk - Areas covered in the handbook include:
- Detailed advice on the statutory and contractual rights of salaried GPs and their employers
- Guidance on how to become a salaried GP and the work involved
- The best way to get involved in local and national representation
Dr Laurence Buckman, Chairman of the BMA’s General Practitioners Committee, says:
- “The Salaried GPs Handbook 2009 is an excellent resource that GPs will find valuable.
- “It is designed to help GPs avoid any pitfalls that might occur by giving them clear advice in plain English. This will make the contractual process simpler for salaried GPs and their employers, as well as helping practices run smoothly.
- “There is also a section providing guidance on a range of professional issues, including signposting on how salaried GPs can get more involved in the representative structures. It is vital that more of these GPs get their voice heard at local and national level so that the BMA can drive forward with improvements to patient care and general practice as a whole.”
